Fix Windows 10 network connection issues

Why can’t I get online ?

To resolve this issue there are a few things to try first.

On a Desktop make sure your Ethernet cable is plugged into your computer and modem.

On a Laptop make sure your wireless device is turned on and active – there will usually be a WiFi indicator LED lit.

Re-boot your Modem by unplugging it for at least a minute and then plug it back in. This will reset your connection to the ISP servers. Wait for the lights on the modem to settle down.

Restart your computer and check the networking icon in the notification area of the Taskbar.

If you still don’t have Internet you have to get into more Techy stuff…

Check your network settings on this computer by opening a command prompt and typing    ipconfig /all   and note your IPv4 IP address and that of your Default Gateway.

Check to see if you can connect to your modem by pinging the Default Gateway IP address of the modem in the command prompt .

It should look something like this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>ping 192.168.1.1

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

If instead of something like “Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64” you have “Request timed out.” on all 4 of the pings, it means there is a problem with your actual connection to the modem / router.

To see if you have an Internet connection repeat but ping naplestechguy.com. If it works this will verify your DNS settings.

You can also open a web browser > open Google.com and type 3 or 4 random letters (ie: stl3) If Google returns results it means you now have an connection to the Internet.

If you still can not connect it usually means that you have more advanced technical issues or there is a problem with your connection to your ISP
